Powered by the latest in lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology, today’s hybrid models can offer potential benefits in terms of reductions in fuel consumption as well as noise and exhaust emissions, but quantifying these has to be rooted in hard facts instead of mere guesswork. With support from Kalmar, terminal operators can clearly identify the potential savings and benefit from the best of both worlds – the performance of a diesel machine enhanced with the environmental advantages of the latest hybrid technologies.
Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has secured an order for nine diesel-electric straddle carriers from the leading European port and transport logistics group Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA). The order was booked in Cargotec's 2016 first quarter order intake, with delivery taking place during the fourth quarter of 2016.
Established in 1968, HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) is the largest and oldest facility for container handling in the Port of Hamburg. The terminal has an annual capacity of more than 3 million TEU. The order continues a long tradition of innovation and collaboration with Kalmar. CTB was the first terminal to introduce the straddle carrier concept as well as a unique automatic stacking crane (ASC) concept featuring three cranes per block. The new units will be used to transport containers from ship-to-shore cranes to the ASCs.
The diesel engine designed for this purpose works as the main source of energy and is optimized to provide the power needed to operate the machine. The energy storage unit associated with the system is used to stabilize the use of energy. This results in a shorter engine operating time, which, in turn, reduces both fuel consumption and wear and tear of the components.
